A website rebuild should improve results, but without careful planning, it can destroy months or years of search visibility in a matter of days. When leads stop after a redesign, the cause is usually one of several technical mistakes that are invisible to the naked eye but devastating to search engines.

Why Website Rebuilds Break Traffic

When a developer rebuilds a website, they often focus exclusively on design, layout, and features. The new site looks better. It works on phones and tablets. The contact forms are easier to use. But underneath the surface, critical elements that Google relies on to find, index, and rank your pages may have been lost or changed.

Search engines do not see your website the way a human visitor does. They read code, follow links, and track dozens of technical signals. When those signals change suddenly, your rankings can collapse before you notice anything is wrong.

The most common causes fall into four categories: broken redirects, lost content, performance problems, and indexing errors. Each one can cut your organic traffic in half. When multiple issues compound, leads can stop entirely.

The Redirect Problem

Every page on your old website had a specific URL. If you had a services page at yoursite.com/services, that page had earned its own ranking in Google over time. When you rebuild the site and change that URL to yoursite.com/our-services, Google sees it as a completely different page. The old URL returns a 404 error. All the ranking history is lost.

Proper redirects tell Google that the old page has moved to a new location. A 301 redirect passes the ranking authority from the old URL to the new one. Without these redirects in place, every changed URL starts over from zero.

Many developers assume that the homepage is the only page that matters, or they redirect a few key pages but ignore the rest. In reality, most local business websites receive traffic to dozens of different pages. A plumber might rank for blog posts about water heater repair, drain cleaning, and emergency service. If those pages disappear or change URLs without redirects, that traffic is gone.

Remember that Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning it primarily crawls and evaluates the mobile version of a website for ranking. Indexing and Crawling Errors

Even if your redirects are correct and your content is intact, leads can stop if Google cannot crawl and index the new site properly. Common mistakes include blocking pages with robots.txt, accidentally setting pages to noindex, or launching the site with a staging environment password still in place.

Some website builders and content management systems set entire sites to noindex during development to prevent Google from indexing the staging version. If the developer forgets to remove this setting before launch, Google will stop indexing your site. Your old pages gradually drop out of the search results, and new pages never get added.

Broken internal links cause similar problems. If your homepage links to a services page, and that link is broken, Google may never discover the services page. Orphaned pages that are not linked from anywhere else on the site will not be crawled or indexed.

Checking Indexing Status

Log into Google Search Console and review the Pages report. It shows how many pages Google has indexed and lists any errors. Look for pages marked as excluded due to noindex tags, robots.txt blocks, or redirect errors.

Submit a new sitemap immediately after the rebuild goes live. The sitemap is an XML file that lists all the important pages on your site and tells Google where to find them. Most content management systems can generate this automatically.

Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to test individual pages. Enter the URL, and Google will tell you whether the page can be indexed and whether it has been crawled recently. If a key page shows errors, fix them and request re-indexing.

The Local Search Dimension

Communicate these priorities to your developer. Make it clear that preserving search rankings is as important as improving design. Request a redirect map that shows exactly how every old URL will be handled. Ask for a staging environment where you can review the new site before it goes live and test for broken links, missing content, and performance problems.

Run a full crawl of the staging site using the same tools Google uses. Check that all pages are accessible, that internal links work, that images load, and that forms submit correctly. Compare the text content of key pages side by side with the old versions to ensure nothing critical was removed.

After launch, monitor traffic closely for at least two weeks. Watch Google Search Console for errors. Track rankings for your most important keywords. If you see a drop, investigate immediately rather than waiting to see if it recovers on its own.
